Heritage Festival 2018

Occupation to Liberation

30th March – 10th May

Of all the Channel Islands, Alderney possibly has the most fascinating history when it comes to events during World War II. Whereas the other Channel Islands were occupied, the only British territories to have experienced that during WWII, Alderney’s residents were evacuated, leaving the island under German rule.

This year, the Guernsey Heritage Festival and its Bailiwick islands of Alderney, Herm and Sark take on ‘Occupation to Liberation’ as a theme. In Alderney there are a variety of events:

30th March – 10th May

St Anne’s Heritage Town Walk

Take a tour of the historic capital. Gather 4 people and contact The Visitor Information Centre with at least 24 hours notice. Adults £6, children £3.

30th March – 10th May

Alderney Museum – Occupation of Alderney

Take a look at the museum records. Open Mon – Sat 10am – 12pm and 2.30 – 4.30pm, Sun 10am – 12pm. Adults £3.

31st March – 10th May

Alderney Photo Challenge

Free competition taking you around Alderney. Available from The Visitor Information Centre.

Evacuation, War Years & Homecoming Screenings

Free documentaries in 3 short screenings starting fro 10am at Alderney Wildlife Trust Office.

The Bells of St Anne’s

At 10am the bells will ring out to signify the start of the heritage events.

Birds and Batteries Boat Tour

Alderney Wildlife Trust boat tour exploring the WWII batteries and anti-tank wall, now occupied by birds. Tickets £25/20.

Bibette Head Guided Tour

Visit one of the accessible bunkers with a guide. 12pm. Tickets: Tickets available from The Visitor Information Centre, £6/3.

4th April

Activity Day for Children

Head to Alderney Museum for some WWII related craft activities. 10am – 12pm.

Dinner and cinema night – an island story

Two course dinner and private screening of an acclaimed musical exploring the occupation and liberation of the island. Tickets: £19. Book direct with the hotel.

6th April

Alderney Live History

Tea and biscuits at Alderney Visitor Centre with Miriam, Hera and Beda who lived through the occupation and liberation.

Much Ado About History

Two course dinner at The Georgian House followed by some historical entertainment. Tickets £25.

Alderney Lighthouse Tour

Explore Trinity Lighthouse at 3pm. Tickets £4/3 from The Visitor Information Centre.
