Passport and Photographic Identity requirements for Alderney

Alderney is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey along with Guernsey, Sark and Herm. Together with the Bailiwick of Jersey, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the UK, they form what is referred to as the Common Travel Area (CTA) and as such British Citizens are free from immigration control. Therefore carrying a passport isn’t necessary. However, if you plan to pop over to France at all you will definitely need your passport and carrying some form of acceptable photographic ID will be necessary for sea and air travel. Acceptable photographic ID can include a:

  • Passport
  • Full new style driving licence
  • Citizen card
  • Armed forces ID card
  • Photographic disabled badge
  • Student ID card
  • Firearms certificate

For those from outside the EU or if you plan to drive in the Channel Islands

If your photographic ID is from outside the EU, you will not need a visa but it is advisable to carry a separate letter from the Home Office confirming your residential status. If you plan on driving whilst on holiday you will need to remember to bring with you a valid insurance certificate covering driving in the Channel Islands as well as your new style photographic driving licence.
